The reason for this study was to shortly characterize the forever evolving psychotherapeutic methods summarized as 'third wave psychotherapies' and to review recent research on the therapeutic impact of these methods.

It was found that 'Third wave psychotherapies' comprise a heterogeneous group of treatments which include acceptance and commitment treatment, behavioural activation, cognitive behavioural analysis, system of psychotherapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, metacognitive therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and schema therapy.

Several trials during the last 3-5 years have shown the effectiveness and efficaciousness of 'third wave psychotherapies'. The 'first wave' is focused on classical conditioning and operant learning. The 'second wave' (classical) is focused on information processing and is currently the dominant contemporary system of psychotherapies worldwide. More than 75 clinical trials for cognitive therapy treatment for unipolar depression has shown that it is superior to placebo and equal to other bona fide treatments and anti-depressive pharmacotherapy. It is superior in effectiveness in reducing the risk of relapse after treatment.


Cognitive therapy has various limitations, similarly to other mental disorder treatments, the effect sizes are limited leaving room for improvement. Treatments are also not universally acceptable. Data is missing that supports the necessity of interventions aimed at content-oriented cognitive change which is the core of classical cognitive therapy. A component analysis shows that efficaciousness of cognitive therapy depends on behavioural activation as only intervention.


The 'third wave' focuses on themes new to behavioural psychotherapies such as metacognition, cognitive fusion, emotions, acceptance, mindfulness, dialectics, spirituality and therapeutic relationships. These techniques are quite heterogeneous. Commonalities are the abandonment or cautious use of content-oriented cognitive interventions and the use of skills deficit models to delineate the core maintaining mechanisms of the disorder being addressed.


To conclude, the third wave of behavioural psychotherapies plays an important role in psychotherapy today and has added significant value to the spectrum of supported treatments for mental disorders and has influence psychotherapy research. The methods used open up treatment possibilities for patient groups such as borderline personality disorder, chronic depression or general anxiety disorder that have received very little attention in the past. There has always been the option to practice sleep hygiene and to simply try to go to bed earlier.If this fails there is always enough sleep medication available by prescription or over the counter.

According to science literature, the secret of How To Get More Sleep or to get better sleep may be to purposefully get less of it. This is called restriction Therapy and it is a component of CBT-I, that is cognitive behavioural therapy specifically for insomnia.

How it works is you need to reduce the amount of time you try to sleep to the actual number of hours you can sleep. You need to keep track of how much sleep you are getting for a couple of weeks, let us say 5-6 hours per night, then you set a non negotiable wake-up time, usually the latest possible hour you can get up, let's say 6.30am. The guidelines of restriction therapy, you do not allow yourself to go to bed until 1am. If this is successful, all yourself to go to bed 15 minutes earlier gradually until you are sleeping up to 7 or 8 hours per night.

The bulk of evidence shows that this approach was about equally as effective as medication. In some cases it was found that it actually works better. CBT-I is more than just sleep restriction — it focuses on changing an insomniac's thoughts and behaviours regarding sleep, and much of it does include sleep advice, like shutting off your electronic devices about an hour before sleep or going to bed and getting up at the same time every day.

The reason why sleep restriction Therapy works is that you are so exhausted by the time you hit the pillow that you immediately fall into a deep sleep so in time, your mind starts associating your bed with actual restful sleep.
