CBT Over Anti-depressants

Cbt Therapist CbttherapistIn an article which focuses on the value of cognitive behavioural Therapy to help children, with high levels of anxiety, learn how to cope better with and prevent the anxiety from growing and spiralling out of control resulting in depression or worse. New research has shown that treating kids for anxiety when they are young may assist with the prevention of more serious mental illnesses, including depression and anxiety disorders.

Children using anti depressants has shown increasing evidence of suicidal thoughts in children taking the drug. Many Doctors and Psychologists rather employ Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as it is often just as effective as the medication.

We have a number of societal problems such as depression and anxiety which affect people of all ages and an intervention that teaches people cognitive skills to enable them to manage those related challenges better. Thus, why don't more people benefit today from the CBT approach?

In my opinion it is the lack of the traditional face to face interaction. People would rather pop a pill than go for training because time is limited, they might feel embarrassed or scared, are anti-social and most importantly the side effects of their illness prevent them from seeking treatment.

We can view cognitive therapy as a method for well-structured cognitive exercise, where a key factor of success is practice. Just like normal physical exercise. We can therefore view the CBT Therapist as a personal trainer who motivates you to stay on track, to propose the right exercise routine based on your personal goals. If the personal trainer is with you the whole time, encouraging you to do and monitoring your exercises, you are most likely to achieve them and complete them.

CBT Helps With Weight Loss And Maintenance

Cognitive Therapists CbttherapistsThrough gathered study material and analysis on weight loss it is obvious that most obese people who have lost weight have gained it all back.As Cognitive Therapists, from our knowledge, the reason that this is happening is that dieters make such drastic lifestyle changes which are hard to sustain, such as eating too few calories, cutting out their favourite foods and not attending social events because there is food or they set unrealistic exercise goals.

They naturally return to their previous lifestyle and pick up all their weight again, if not more.To stop this from happening our Cognitive Therapists suggest reasonable and maintainable goals, dieters will lose the weight, it will be at a slower rate but it will be unlikely for them to pick it up again.

One of the dieters at Beck Institute For Cognitive Therapy disliked cooking, by using many different cognitive therapy techniques they helped her prioritize exercise and healthy eating and then did problem solving. Another dieter loved pizza and as we mentioned cutting out your favourite foods is something that dieters often do and cannot control. Becks Institute taught this dieter a combination of cognitive and behavioral skills to control his urges for pizza which decreased the chances of him gaining the lost weight again.

To conclude, drastic weight loss solutions that are not realistic and maintainable do not last for the long run, but if they are you are more likely not to regain the lost weight.

Comparing iCBT to face-to-face CBT for Depression

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Cbttherapists

CBT is used to treat depression which is still considered the best option in treating depression and it is definitely not losing its effectiveness according to Johnsen and Friborg's (2015) meta-analysis. iCBT (internet based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is an acceptable form of treatment for depression but so is face-to-face CBT. The question is which one has a greater effect?

Study material was collected from trials that investigated treatment for adult depression. It was found that face-to-face CBT treatment sessions were more effective compared to iCBT. It was also found that face-to-face CBT patients completed their treatment more by 3.1% compared to iCBT. The percentage of patients that did not complete their treatment with face-to-face CBT completed on average 24.5% while iCBT completed on average 42.1%.

To conclude this investigation, studies were found in the trials that showed that face-to-face CBT is more effective than Internet based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
